Les Q Eco-Team Gold Award
Justly proud Eco-Team students report for La Baguette

We are writing to inform you about the recent eco event hosted by Les Quennevais School called Green Travel Day.
On the 15th May, the Eco-Team organised a Green Travel Day, the idea behind the day was to raise awareness of pollution and congestion on Jersey’s roads. This would show the students how, just by contributing to the day, they could help to make a difference.
A fun aspect to our day was for everyone to come to school dressed in non-uniform, with at least one green thing and to donate £1. The money that we raised will be put towards improvements to the school grounds and playground.
Another idea of the day was when the students entered the school grounds in an eco-friendly way they each received a goody bag generously donated by HSBC. After students collected their goody bag, we recorded how they travelled to school (on a survey) either by walking, cycling (a lot using the new St. Peter’s cycle track), sharing a car or bus or by more fun and adventurous methods, such as tricycles or skateboards! This meant that we could give a prize for the greenest School House, bringing a fun, competitive side to the event.
A month before the Green Travel Day the Eco-Team visited local businesses in St. Brelade, to encourage them to also join in. To ensure that we included the community, we prepared a letter, poster and sign up sheets for them to have. The community was very keen to support us. Local Primary schools also got involved and joined in with eco-friendly ways to travel.
Everyone embraced the scheme as numbers of cars where halved that day, and everyone did their part in helping the environment. At the school grounds were Channel 103 and Peter Mac broadcasting live and doing interviews, Jersey Bike Repairs giving free servicing to cyclists, The States of Jersey Recycling Trailer for students to look at, Derek Warrick Honda with their hybrid car and JEC electric Smart cars which staff and our Deputy Head drove. Deputy Ann Pryke was also present. Our very own and very talented Les Quennevais Steel Band kept us all entertained.
We hope that Green travel Day can inspire more events in the future and we hope that the parish and the island has benefitted from the day.

We were at Durrell for The Jersey Environment Week 2009 Awards. We didn’t know if we were going to get Bronze, Silver or Gold. When we arrived we looked at the other schools displays and what they have done to help the environment, one school had chickens. On our display we had information about our Green Travel Day, we also had a 3D model of what pollution was doing to the sea and we had a Paper Mache fish with plastic bags in its mouth to show that the fish can eat these plastic bags and can die. Then we had to take our seats for the ceremony and the Primary schools had their Awards presented first and then the man said onto the Secondary schools and we were really excited but nervous about what award we were going to get. When the man said the Bronze Award goes to……..La Roquier we felt more excited because it was either Silver or Gold, The Silver award went to JCG and we knew that it was Gold. We went on stage to receive our Award and our teachers and headmaster said we should be really proud of ourselves and we are.
